BS in Game Design and Development

Play with IT.

You never know who or what you'll find in our classrooms. A Shinto priest. A spooky mansion. Alien spaceships. Disembodied voices. This is the stuff games are made of.

The Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Development (GD&D) is one of the few game design degree programs in the country. It allows students to explore the entertainment technology landscape, while still pursuing a broad-based university education. The program focuses its technical roots in the Computing and Information Sciences disciplines. At the same time, it will expose you to the many development processes involved in game design, animation and simulation.

The GD&D program will give you a deep understanding of the medium's technical roots. It will explore the creative application of software development, and the way in which this rapidly growing industry operates. But it is not all fun and games. It also provides students with a core computing education that will prepare them for graduate study or employment in a number of fields.

During this four year program, students complete a core of required coursework, and then pursue courses in advanced studies that are customizable to their interests and career goals. In addition, all students complete coursework in the liberal arts, the social sciences, and the laboratory sciences in keeping with the longstanding traditions of a traditional university degree. Students can further customize their experience though both general elective coursework and free electives.

In particular, the program integrates strong programming skills, which are mandatory in the game development field, with game design and collaborative skills that are essential to success in the games industry, where multi-faceted professionals work on development teams. From creating avatars to navigating multiple levels to designing a world of your own, the GD&D program is challenging, multidisciplinary, and the absolute Nth degree in cutting edge technology. Also, did we mention IT is fun?

BS in New Media Interactive Development

Media. It is the moment of experience, and the experience of the moment. It is communication, art, technology, and problem solving rolled into one. As Renaissance men and women, our New Media students are called upon to provide both creative vision and the skills to bring that vision to an audience.

The last decade has seen unprecedented innovation in technologies for communication, interactivity, and delivery of information. Online games, search engines, dynamic and personalized Web sites – New Media touches all of us daily. A wide variety of industries use New Media to reach targeted audiences for advertising, entertaining, transacting business, and training. Over the last few years, New Media products and services have become a staple in industry, education, the arts, the sciences, politics, and entertainment. Indeed, there is virtually no area of society that does not benefit from the capabilities that new media offers. And wherever there is new media, you will find the need for IT.

The new media industry lives where art meets technology. Collaboration between designers and developers is fundamental. The BS in New Media Interactive Development along with its sister program, the BFA in New Media Design and Imaging, prepares students to work in interdisciplinary teams and to experience the excitement of an industry that is constantly seeking to redefine the world’s perception of the moment.

Our New Media students spend their first two years learning essential new media concepts and skills, working in concert with their peers on the design side. They gain a solid background in design, programming and computing technologies, and the development of dynamic experiences. As they advance, New Media students start to focus on their chosen specialization. Coursework includes:

* Programming. At least two languages. Then you’re ready to learn the next one on your own.
* Asset creation. Images, sound, typography, video, 3D models, animation.
* Web design and development from every angle. The look, the structure, the experience.
* Human Computer Interaction. Because you’re designing for people.
* Connectivity and networks. To make sense of the Internet’s complexity.
* Specialization. Select advanced courses from what you’re interested in.
* Games, simulation, and interactive applications
* Alternative and experimental experiences: for mobile devices, physical objects, 3d spaces, and more.

Two Degrees of Collaboration

Any New Media project is an exciting collaborative effort, involving professionals with a variety of skill sets. Marketing professionals, designers, musicians, audio/visual engineers, Webmasters, writers, and last but not least, IT professionals-—New Media relies on a diversity of talents, voices and resources.

Because of this, our New Media program encourages students from different disciplines to learn and work in close collaboration with one another. Students from both the BS in New Media Interactive Development and the BFA in New Media Design and Imaging take classes together, learn together, and work together on projects.

In their final year, this collaboration culminates in the New Media Team Project, a two-quarter capstone project. Designers and developers with a variety of specializations work together to create a rich and detailed project for a real client. The result is stunning work, a compelling portfolio piece, and the unforgettable experience of seeing creative vision brought to life.
